What's a good name for a boy? We've pretty much settled on Mary Elizabeth if it's a girl.

Robert or Alexander have always been my favorites but unfortunately they can both be shortened...

A "friend" of mine has just named her son Odin. Does this mean you are asking this for the obvious reason? If so, congratissimo...

I can quite imagine Grace wanting to call him Apostrophe, and Garner insisting on Cthulu... :D

We, of all people, had a thing for traditional and biblical names you find in every European language, only with spelling and pronounciation variations. Elias, Jonathan, Jakob, ... etc. I threw in a few, mostly North German Dialects and others, names like Hannes, Tjaden, Silas, Tonda, Henry(k), Harm, but got a veto on most of them...
    Well, have a look...

Cthulu is a good middle name!

I also like Alexander. Alexander Cthulu...has a nice ring to it:D

    Congrats!

Pterry. I'll continue insisting upon it until Garner stabs me.

Btw, here are some of our own vetoed boy-names: Kurt, Curtis, Padraig, Maxim (NOT after a magazine!!!), Ruslan...

I have always been partial to the name Geoffrey. That would have been my choice for a boy's name, since I won't likely use it feel free:)

...language question, vetoed means one parent ruled them out, right?

    Yup...

Congrats you two, soon to be three :)

I always had a thing for Sebastian, can't be shortened and it was from that great kids cartoon of the boy going aver the Swiss Alps to find his family with that really cool big dog... Buggered if I can remembered what it was called abd Google is giving me no love.

    Otherwise, Nevel.

  13. mowgli

Actually, Sebastian CAN be shortened to Bastian - which I've been partial to since seeing The Neverending Story - and I even had a dream of naming our son Sebastian a few weeks ago (on top of everything, pregnancy gives you REALLY weird dreams!!!)

Oh, and the show was apparently called Belle and Sebastian!

Thats so weird! Google did give me the answer but I though it was talking about the band. There you go Sebastian is a great name on all levels.

    There's still Nevel though.

Alexander Cthulu...that is an Ace name

Goddammit Spiky, it was the Pyrenees, not the Alps ! First time I watched it was in Swindon and it seemed so abstract as a place, the second time I was actually living in the Pyrenees, totally weird... Also, the Japanese seem to think that all mountains look kind of like Mount Fujiyama, so the mountains look nothing much like the real ones. :bunny: The group were named after the book from which the series was made.

Also, Sebastian can be shortened to Seb or Bastian...

maybe i should try again for my initial suggestion, Magnum Innominandum.

  18. TamyraMcG

    TamyraMcG Active Member

Sure, go for it. I was thinking about my suggestion and it might not be such a good choice, especially if you chose a middle name that started with a vowel, initials should be considered as well as possible nicknames, and I think GAG or GIG or GOG would be tough to grow up with. My mom's initials now are BAD and she sort of likes that, and my grandfather's were FAD and he absolutely loved them and that my grandmother's are EAD. Your Magnum I. Garner probably isn't the best you could come up with though. Mary Elizabeth Garner is MEG and that is sweet. There is always Justin. Justin Case its a boy. ( I actually know someone named Justin Casey, for that reason)

It sure would be better to Reuben. That asshole had sold his brother because their dad bought him a pimp coat.

Poor kid, what has he ever done to you?! :D

So... what's wrong with Mary Elizabeth for a boy exactly?

  22. Tephlon

In Dutch "Bastian" (Or more accurately "Bastiaan") gets shortened to "Bas".

I think it should be something that says "Ruler of the world (to be)".

  23. spiky

    spiky Bar Wench

So the kids going to actually be called Great God Garner? The poor thing, talk about having to live up to your name. And it will have the triple G (GGG) initials.

On the upside all of us will remember his name on the down side he'll probably be burned at the stake by rampant monarchists.

Seb is an evil name to call someone and Bastian's not really that much of a shortening. Keeping with the cartoon theme though you could always go with Astro (as in Boy). I reckon Astro Garner has a ring to it :)

Ba has a friend who named his son Aleczander William Wayne Sithis Gasaway. Don't be that guy.

My Lord Ba, I don't think anyone could be that guy. I suspect he exists only for quantum statistical purposes

Reg always loved Potato as a name but we can't agree on whether it's feminine or masculine.

  30. spiky

Ends in 'o' must be masculine but its the kind of name thats sure to get your kid beaten up at school.

Clint is a very under-used name and would combine nicely with Clay...

Here are a few Gaelic ones I love:

    Leithris
    Eolas
    Busaras
    Luan
    Amárach

(although I'm sure only maze and possible Jackal will find that funny...)

Leithris. A very traditional Irish name that! Definately Leithris...or Busaras. Though that might be too close to Bursar...:D

Well, I'm just glad Tallulah has been discarded. Especially, if as the name suggests, it's a boy.

Also: I think that's the first scan photos i've ever seen that look like an actual baby.

Although, it's not the case that i see a large amount of the things. Indeed, it might be that those are the first ones i've ever seen outwith the land of TV.

    But, still!

Tallulah was sadly vetoed. Other vetoed names (without saying who suggested which):

    Thomas
    Magnum Innominand[um/a]
    Matilda
Henry James (at least three times)
    Terry
    Norman
    Pope
    Everyone Hates Doors
    Everyone Hates Roman

It was Henry James the Third, that's different!

That one sounds more like some sort of medicine.

"Got the runs? take Magnum Innominand twice daily for quick relief!"

Now, just "Magnum", thats a winner!

  55. Garner

no no no, Magnum Inominandum is a boy's name. Magna Inominanda is a girl's name. Magna Inominand is just stupid. like you, doors. stupid.

He appears to have big feet and definitely has a massive head, according to his measurements. *sigh*

    Well he's (?) definitely Clay's child then.

Magnum Inominandum is either a laxative or dire-rear medication. Its a named designed to get the kid beaten up. You could always try some great New Zealander names...

Talullah does the Hullah in Hawai and my all time favourite of a kid named after the place of conception: Bus Stop Number 16.
