Don't be silly Mal, Shirley is not a number. Even trolls know that...

    One. Two. Shirley. Lots.

    See, doesn't sound right.

I could be in the less literal sense, like when people say: 'I've got your number, mister!', meaning they know exactly what you are up to and what type of character you are. In which case the answer is clearly, erm...

No, guys, you're all reading the question wrong - PTerry's number is obviously novocaine if he is at the dentist, but maybe aspirin or paracetamol in lesser circumstances!

(Mal - why has the software inserted a space where I didn't put one - I only wanted to italicize part of the word?)

Edited to use Delphine's tip - thanks, Delphine! This will, of course, confuse anyone now reading my question to Mal!

use and [/ i] instead of [ and ] to stop that.

    hmmm... or, more clearly:

    Code:
     [ i ]numb[ / i ] er
    will come out as

    number
